Tip for learning artists: all figures should begin with a strong gesture drawing, followed by loose roughs. It’s at this stage you can make edits and refine the characters and poses with the least amount of trouble. For example, in this pose I chose to completely reversed the positions of the legs, improving the power of the scene completely.

Savor the Freedom
May 9, 2012 |

A lot of beginning artists obsess over becoming professionals. Their daily thought is about getting that first gig. About getting published in that respected annual. About winning competitions, about getting noticed, about doing big, professional jobs. About making a living from their art.

And let me be clear: all of that is awesome. I am not here to dispute that.

What I’d like to do is encourage you, if you haven’t made the leap into the professional art world yet, to savor the position you’re in right now. Enjoy the incredible freedom you have. You’re unhindered by commissions, unknown to the world, and not pressured to constantly produce quality work.

Once you’re deep in the professional world, finding time for personal work is a challenge. You’re neglecting paid work to spend time on your own projects. Oftentimes, you’ll simply be so swamped in work for others that you’ll hardly have any time at all to do your own work. To do work that really speaks to you. Now let me say this: I love my job and I’m extremely lucky to work for the people I do. They give me awesome assignments pretty consistently. But at the end of the day, the painting is for them—not me. Part of me misses the days where all I had to do was whatever I wanted.

Beginning artists also are crazy about getting noticed. Enjoy not being noticed! I’m serious! That day will come, in time, when you’ll have more than enough eyes looking at your work. For now, though, relish the anonymity.

And lastly, enjoy the freedom to fail. If you fail on a personal piece, no one ever has to know. You failed, you learned something, and you moved on to the next piece. No harm done. If I fail, however, on a commissioned piece for a major client there is at least a decent chance they won’t hire me again. So no matter what, every single day, I have to be on my game producing a high level of work. Unfortunately, this tends to push a lot of artists into safe areas where they know they can succeed. They won’t feel the same freedom to explore and experiment. So while you have this freedom, exploit it to your advantage. Fail and fail often. Try everything.

Keep striving to “make it,” but enjoy the time till you do.

Very inspiring article and i’m personally very grateful to this artist for saying that encouraging words. It made my day . No, really.

I think everyone needs to hear this now and again. I certainly do, even if I don’t plan on becoming a professional artist. Thanks for sharing, Smile! <3
